Carmelette snatches Cangolf crown

-
Busan Asian Games veteran Carmelette Villaroman lost a three-stroke lead on a searing frontnine charge by fellow club bet Lucy Landicho but kept her composure and watched her rival crumble on the closing holes to win the ladies crown in the third Canlubang Amateur Open golf championship at the Canlubang south course yesterday.

Villaroman carded a final round 75 with nines of 38 and 37 while Landicho also scored a 75 with a 35 and 40.

Landicho drew level with Villaroman at five-under in the tournament after her sizzling 35 on the front nine but failed to sustain her momentum with a final nine of 40.

Villaroman finished with a three-day haul of 222 for the crown with Landicho settling for second place with a 225, Lora Roberto third place with a 79-233, Tracy Locsin fourth with 77-239, Lina de Guzman 78-241 and Ia Bakunawa 82-248.

Jay Bayron, also of the host club, broke par with a one-under 71 and seized a two-shot lead over Southwoods’ Gene Bondoc (74) and Luisita’s Marvin Dumandan (72) in the men’s championship over at the north course.

Bayron is at one-under 215 as he tees off in the final round today. Bondoc and Dumandan are tied at 217.

Four Canlubang bets follow with Jun Bernis and Dave Hernandez at 219 and JR Tanpingco and Ronnie Torrecampo at 220.

In the two-day Division 2 championship, veteran Tommy Manotoc had an even par 72 to lead by two over Riviera’s bobby Celestino. Southwoods’ bong Brobio came in third with a 75. Jimmy Feliciano showed the way in Class A with a net 67, followed by Bobby Inigo (67) and Tony Olives (70).
