Army, Kaya dispute int’l football crown

-
Defending champion Army and Kaya Football Club ousted their respective rivals Sunday to arrange a title showdown in the second Army-Utilco International Invitational Football Cup at the Ascom field in Ft. Bonifacio.

Richmond Braga struck twice in the 47th and 56th minutes as the Armymen toppled San Beda, 2-0, while Peter Amores knocked in a goal in the 68th minutes as Kaya nipped University of the Philippines, 1-0, in two First Division matches.

Army B banked on a golden goal by Randy Sasisad in the extension period to edge DLSU, 3-2, and also advance to the Second Division finals against El Magistrado, 3-2 winner over Far Eastern University.

The third place and final matches will be held on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Ascom field. It will be FEU against DLSU at 8 a.m. and UP against San Beda at 10 for third spots in the Second and First Divisions, respectively.

The Army B-El Magistrado match is set at 1 p.m. while the Army-Kaya contests will be played at 3 o’clock.

FEU’s Kristin Kirk Magbalon broke the ice in the seventh minute but El Magistrado’s Rolen Dean leveled the count in the 21st. Then El Magistrado’s James Rafols delivered what turned out to be the winning marker in the 68th.

After David Kim gave DLSU a 1-0 lead in the 25th, Army B’s Judy Saluria and Gener Rower struck in succession to make it 2-1. But Kim came to DLSU’s rescue once more in the 57th to knot the count.

The two teams remained tied until the final whistle, paving the way for the extension.
