Asuncion, Piencenaves cop JVC titles

Kennie Asuncion crushed Valle Verde teammate Margarita Manalang, 11-2, 11-3, to win the ladies singles crown but brother Kennevic conceded the men’s title in the JVC Open badminton championships Sunday at the Glorietta Activity Center.

Asuncion overwhelmed her opponent in all departments of the game to win the P15,000 champion’s purse before a Sunday crowd. She also won a trophy and certificate, eye wear from Rudy Project and a DVD component system from the sponsoring JVC Philippines, Inc.

Her brother Kennevic, the top seed, fell to Ian Piencenaves of the Army-Premier City Club, in a hard-fought three-setter, 5-15, 15-12, 15-7..

Kennie won a special award from the Philippine STAR for having the most number of wins after she bagged the mixed doubles title with sibling Kennevic, the ladies doubles crown with partner Weena Lima and the elite ladies singles.

The Asuncions defeated the pair of Naresh Ramnani and Weena Lim, 15-5, 15-8, then Kennie partnered with Lim to beat the partnership of Alma Ledesma and Margarita Malang also of Valle Verde, 15-2, 15-1.

The other champions in the tournament sponsored by Yonex, Pioneer Allianz, Philippine STAR, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, National Sports Grill, Rudy Project, Tokyo Tokyo, Accel and 103.5 K Lite were Johnson Dionisio (boys singles), Raquel Ann Guerrero (girls singles), Ricky Boy Cajefe-Kelvin Ang (boys doubles), Raquel Ann-Rachel Ann Guerrero (girls doubles), Andrew Romualdez-Raquel Ann Guerrero (mixed doubles), Salvador Banquiles- Renato Reyes (veterans men’s doubles), Salvador and Jeannette Banquiles (veterans mixed doubles) and 1 G Kids Food (corporate).

Dionisio outlasted Raymund Dawal, 11-15, 15-13, 15-1, while Guerrero bested her sister Rachel Ann, 11-5, 11-4. The champions each won a college education plan courtesy of Pioneer Allianz. The champions and first runners-up also won a two-week badminton training program overseas from event organizer International Management Group.

The other winners were Cajefe-Ang over Michael Paclibar-Michael Camiling, 17-15, 7-15, 15-6; the Guerreros over Ronielie and Jertie Kagalingan, 15-6, 15-5; Romualdez-Guerrero over Jobette Hereli Co-Rachel Ann Guerrero, 15-6, 15-6; Banquiles-Reyes over Jose Fernando-Manric Zalamea, 15-4, 15-4; Banquiles over Brandon Chan-Elzabeth Ng , 15-7, 9-15, 15-2, and 1 G Kids over HSBC.
