Asuncions gain in JVC tilt

Kennevic and Kennie Asuncion continued their explosive show in singles and mixed doubles competitions as they towed the rest of the field to the quarterfinals of the JVC Open Badminton Championships starting today at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati.
Kennevic and Kennie justified their billing as the top seeds as they crushed the tandem of Christopher Conde and Sandy Banquiles of the University of Santo Tomas, 15-0, 15-1, in the round of 16 of the mixed doubles competition at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Kennie also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Elite category at the expense of Ann Lorraine Sy, 11-0, 11-0, while second seed Margot Masalang whipped Dalisay, 11-3, 11-1.
The tournament drew 460 entries in 12 events, of which 155 competed in the juniors division and 289 in the elite or open category of the tournament staged by the International Management Group and sponsored by Yonex, Pioneer Allianz, Philippine STAR, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, National Sports Grill, Rudy Project, Tokyo Tokyo, Accel and 103.5 K Lite.
PNP chief Edgardo Aglipay, executive vice president of the Philippine Badminton Association, JVC chairman Faustino Salud, and JVC president Toshinori Yokohama will be on hand for the opening ceremonies which start at 11 a.m. JVC general manager Kazue Salud will also grace the rites.
