Rojas, Yap show way in archery

Arnold Rojas collected 1253 points yesterday to rule the single FITA round competition in the 2002 national archery championships at the UP-PSC range in Diliman, Quezon City.

Rojas beat Marvin Cordero (1249) and Christian Cubilla (1222) in the men’s adult level. Rojas topped the 70-meter and 30-meter distance events with 310 and 347 points, respectively, but Cordero and Cubilla posted the best scores of 291 and 313 in the 90 meters and 50 meters, respectively.

Earl Yap nipped Raul Ramon Arambulo by a single bullseye in the compound division’s single FITA round after both finished with 1318 points. Yap also topped the 50 meters (331) and 30 meters (351) while Arambulo ruled 70 meters with 330 and matched Yap’s 351 in 30 meters. Carlos Carag fired 316 in the 90 meters.

Yap and Arambulo tied the 351 national mark set by Manuel Martinez last month.

Gen. Jose Marlowe Pedregosa, PNP crime laboratory chief superintendent who donated the medals in the tourney supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, won the Masters title in the compound division with 1181 points, way ahead of Nestor de Castro (1116) and Benito Penzon Jr. (979).

Other winners so far:

Girls’ division — Patty Barriga, 1178, cadet; Edwina delos Reyes, 1169, standard round (high school); Delos Reyes, 545, double 50-meter distance; Hazel Rosales, 654, double 30-meter distance; Sherlyn Palatao, 1145, standard round (college); Palatao, 510, 50 meters; Palatao, 635, double 30 meters; Delos Reyes, 545, double 50 meters; and Rosales, 654, double 30. meters.

Boys’ division — Bryan Carlo Figueroa, 1203, FITA competition; Bernard Yamson, 1161, intermediate level; Gemmo Fernandez, 1155, cadet level; Ronaldo Cascayan, 1264, standard round, (high school); Cascayan, 596, double 50 meters, and 668, double 30 meters; Rowel Eisma, 1175, college level; Enelmar Venus, 544, double 50 meters; and Eisma, 639, double 30 meters.

Commissioners Cynthia Carreon and William Ramirez and POC president Celso Dayrit were invited to present the medals.
