Hotdogs gun for top slot
April 20, 2002 | 12:00am
Purefoods seeks top seeding in the quarterfinals while Airfreight 2100/FedEx guns for the last slot in the Magic Four as they take on Red Bull and Talk N Text, respectively, today in the penultimate playdate of the Samsung PBA Governors Cup eliminations at the Philsports Arena.
The Hotdogs are favored to win against the slumping Thunder in their 3:45 p.m. tiff but the Express are likely to have their hands full versus the Phone Pals in their 6 p.m. setto.
Coach Bill Bayno and his wards will have a shot at the top seeding in the quarterfinals if the Hotdogs lose their earlier match with the Thunder. But if both Purefoods and Talk N Text prevail and close their elims stints with identical 9-2 win-loss cards, the Hotdogs gain the No. 1 slot by virtue of the win-over-the-other rule.
FedEx, however, is likely to go all-out to stop Talk N Text to achieve its own goal of clinching a spot in the Magic Four for a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.
Four teams -- Red Bull, San Miguel, Sta. Lucia and Alaska -- have a chance to tie FedEx at fourth place. But among the four, only the Beermen and the Aces can unseat the Express via the quotient tiebreak.
It will be San Miguel versus Alaska and Sta. Lucia against Shell in the final playdate of the elims tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum.
