Letran, FEU spikers pace Nestea qualifier

-
Letran College and Far Eastern University made big moves as the two pulled off crucial victories in their respective divisions yesterday to firm up their chances of making it to the finals of the sixth Nestea Beach Volleyball Championships at the La Salle-Greenhills grounds in San Juan.

Letran’s gutsy pair of Sherilyn Carillo and Cathlea Villaluz made short work of the tandem of Jovielyn Abille and Melanie Chua of Manuel Luis Quezon University, 21-8, to remain unscathed after two games in the annual event sponsored by Nestea Ice Tea.

FEU’s Randy Fallorina and Jeoffrey Guevarra likewise preserved their unbeaten slate with a 21-18 edging of College of St. Benilde, spearheading the men’s side going into the final part of the NCR qualifiers set from April 5 to 7 at the same venue. Also unbeaten in the men’s division were Letran, University of the East and Adamson University while joining Letran at the helm in the women’s side were St. Jude College, Philippine Normal University, Philippine Christian University, UE and Mapua Institute of Technology.

The event, supported by official outfitter Speedo, Astring-o-Sol Ice, Asian Spirit, Mikasa, WG&A Superferry, Villa de Oro, Boracay Gold Crown Club, Carl’s Jr. and Kenny Rogers, resumes on April 5 with the Luzon and Visayas-Mindanao qualifiers scheduled on April 13-14 and April 17-18, respectively.

Sixteen teams in each division would make it into the next round, all of them battling for the top four spots into the finals set at the island of Boracay from May 11 to 12. — Joey Villar
