Air Force drew inspiration from the surprise appearance of their commanding general to pull off an exciting 2-1 victory over Navy last Saturday night to capture the Third Globe Super Cup football crown at the Philsports pitch in Pasig City.
With Air Force chief Gen. Benjie Defensor rooting for them, the Airmen soared and banked on the heroics anew of national player Yanti Barsales in bagging the championship on top of the top cash prize of P50,000.
Receiving a 35-yard pass from a direct free kick by teammate Edsel Bracamonte, the enterprising striker booted in the marginal goal in the 75th minute from pointblank following a goalmouth scramble to seal the Seamens fate.
Navy settled for the runner-up pot of P20,000.
Army routed Kaya, 5-2, to place third in the event sponsored by Globe Telecoms and organized by the National Capitol Region Football Association.
Aside from Gen. Defensor also gracing the championship and awarding ceremonies were Philippine Football Federation executive vice president Mariano Araneta, NCRFA president Santiago Elizalde and general secretary Tomas Lozano.
"On behalf of the NCRFA, I would like to thank all the participating teams and those who made the third Globe Super Cup a success. We look forward to an even bigger edition of the event next year," said Elizalde.
Air Force scored the icebreaker in the 36th, smashing a looping 30-yard volley that bounced off the crossbar and out of the outstretched hands of Navy goalie Lober Sabacan, younger brother of former national goalkeeper Melo Sabacan.
