24 teams clash in beach football at Subic Freeport

-
The emerging summer sport of beach football takes center stage anew today at the Subic Freeport with the staging of the Luzon Cup beach football tournament with 24 teams entered.

The third leg of the Rexona National Beach Football Series 2001, the tournament serves as the qualifying round for Luzon-based football clubs to the national beach football championships set later this year in Dumaguete City with the top four men’s teams advancing to the national finals.

Organized by the Beach Football Association of the Philippines (BFAP) which has been tasked by the Philippine Football Federation to oversee the development of the sport, a variation of regular football played five to a side on a beach field, the event’s four qualifiers will join Central Philippines University Philippines-Iloilo and Boracay-based Boom Boom in the national finals.

Last month, the Visayas-Mindanao Cup of the Rexona-backed event was held in Boracay where CPU and Boom Boom finished first and second to earn the first two slots.

Supported also by Adidas, San Miguel Super Dry, Viva Mineral Water, SBMA, Subic International Hotel, Mama Cita, Computer Minds Phils., and Gas Internet Cards, the event has attracted 16 men’s and eight women’s teams, including defending champion Super Dry in the men’s side and Baguio on the distaff side.

Other teams entered include the Philippine Army, Kaya, Mama Cita, Sunken Garden, FEU, UP-Diliman, Los Borrachos, Giordano, UST, Assumption and Blue Guard.
