Ana Freezers came up with a solid game despite a depleted lineup, beating Hapee Toothpaste, 80-64, to gain a share of early lead with Shark Energy Drink in the PBL Chairman's Cup at the Makati Coliseum yesterday.
With the acquisition of big men Ruel Buenaventura and Bong Quiambao still up in the air, Ana played with only 10 men but worked as one cohesive unit to start their campaign in the tournament on a good note.
It was a sweet victory for the Freezers, specially playing assistant coach Rey Mendez who called the shots with the team management still looking for a new coach to replace Dante Gonzalgo.
"Natutuwa ako at ganito ang kinalabasan ng unang laro namin," said Mendez, who finished with nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and one block.
Ronald Tubid and Ariel Capus got the job done when things got a little out of hand in the final quarter, igniting a crucial run to clinch the win.
In the only other game, Montaña Pawnshop started its title campaign on a bright note as it scuttled Osaka Iridology, 69-58.
