A three-way battle for supremacy in the team race looms in the second leg of the 2001 Shell Super Karting Championships today at the Carmona Racing Circuit in Carmona, Cavite.
ARC-Tony Kart tries to extend its dominance when it seeks its second straight win in the team competition in this prestigious, nine-part series organized by Carmona Circuit Phils. and sponsored by Coca-Cola, Bridgestone, Nokia, Demvels Enterprises, Eastway Racing and Match Box/Hot Wheels.
Bannered by well-known movie/TV actor Dominic Ochoa, ARC-Tony Kart defeated Kart 1 and Demvels in the kickoff leg last March 4.
"We expect another tight battle in the team competition this weekend," said project manager Rose Feria. "ARC-Tony Kart will surely try to make it two in a row, while Kart 1 and Demvels will try to get back into contention."
Jess Garcia of Kart 1 guns for his second straight win against Jess Cabalinan and Mon Tanjuatco of Demvels in the centerpiece Formula A category.
Garcia, the 28-year-old lawyer from Cebu City, topped their action-packed first leg despite the challenge of Cabalinan and Tanjuatco.
Also favored to duplicate their first-leg victories are Angelo Barretto in the Demvels-sponsored Formula 125; Manuel Borja in the FSL Light; Victor Yap in the FSL Heavy; Allan Uy in the intercon; and Tyson Sy in the Jr. Kt. and Cadet 85cc.
Barretto, who was honored by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) for his exploits in motorsports last year, is picked over Bert Neuhof, Lee Bumgarner and Mike Francisco.
Borja is favored in the FSL Light over Alvin Drueco and J.P. Carino, Yap is tipped in the FSL Heavy over Dennis Almuete and Edgar Quesada, and Uy is picked in the intercon over Mario Cunanan, Christian Sotto and Ochoa.
Sy, the 12-year-old elementary student of Grace Christian High School, is also favored in the Jr. Kt. over Eduardo Pena and Don Pastor and the Cadet 85cc over Mark Bumgarner and Marty Aguilar.
