PBL honors league’s best today

Top achievers of the ongoing PBL Challenge Cup get the limelight today in Philippine Basketball League awards ceremony at the National Sports Grill in Greenbelt.

The biggest question in the affair at 3 p.m. is who among the three top contenders — Shark’s Chester Tolomia and Roger Yap, and Welcoat’s Ren-Ren Ritualo will emerge the Most Valuable Player of this conference?

Chester Tolomia, after the elimination and semifinal rounds, earned the top spot with 446 SP’s, averaging 10.3 points and 6.5 rebounds a game.
Teammate Roger Yap Jr. is eyeing his second MVP after copping the plum in the PBL Chairman’s Cup as he took second overall with 443, norming 12.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals a game.

Welcoat’s Ren-Ren Ritualo, the PSA major awardee for amateur basketball, is third overall with 441. The 6’3 streak shooter, a key factor to the triple crown feats of both the Paint Masters and the La Salle Green Archers, remains the league’s top scorer with an average of 14.6 points, aside from 2.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals a game.

Completing the top five list are Blu Sun Power Marlon Legaspi (438 SP’s) who’s eyeing to become the second MVP-rookie after Eric Menk and Yancy de Ocampo (418) who’s looking forward to his first MVP.

Statistics make up only 75 percent of the criteria in choosing the MVP with the rest of the 25 percent coming from players, coaches and media votes.

Also up for grabs are the slots in the Mythical Team, 2nd Mythical Team, Top Newcomer, Most Improved Player and the Sportsmanship awards.
