Twelve teams try to outgun each other right in the first round of the Infocom Grand Intervillage golf championship which kicks off its 36-hole finale today at the north and south courses of the Canlubang golf complex in Laguna.
So much is at stake in the first 18 holes of the championship with all teams, divided into three divisions, out to seize the lead early and gain the much-needed momentum for the final round next Wednesday.
Dasmarinas, Filinvest, Greenhills I and Tahanan, winners in their respective sectoral eliminations, are the main attraction in the event sponsored by Infocom Technologies and PLDT with each team captain hoping to draw out the best from their arsenal of 12 players, the best 10 scorers will count in the Stableford scoring format.
"Nobody seems to hold a distinct advantage over the other, so we expect a tight, thrilling battle right in the first round," said Vince Villafuerte, the organizer of the event who put up the golf series 12 years ago in an effort to foster camaraderie among village golfers in the metropolis.
The same kind of competition is expected in the two other divisions with Magallanes, Corinthian, Greenhills 2 and Merville A, the runners-up in the qualifiers, vying for the A Division plum in this event supported by Home Cable, Smart Communications, Alaxan, ICTSI, BJ Marthel International, Menzi and Co., STI College, Pisanti golfwear, Callaway-Odyssey and McCallan Whisky.
The B Division crown will be contested by Wack Wack, White Plains, Montevista and BF Paranaque, the teams which finished third in the sectoral elims.
