Chess fight shifts to Istanbul

-
The Philippine Chess Federation-backed RP team left for Istanbul, Turkey last night, determined to field its own squad in the World Chess Olympiad and pursue its case in the FIDE General Assembly which convenes on Nov. 3.

Despite its setback at the Makati Regional Trial Court Tuesday night, where its petition for a Temporary Restraining Order stopping the National Chess Federation of the Phils. from participating in the event was turned down, the PCF remained hopeful of a breakthrough in its case against the NCFP in the FIDE Congress.

PCF lawyers said the TRO is only a temporary setback because a civil case had already been filed with the courts, specifically against the NCFP, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.

PCF president Jesus Ingeniero said he is counting on the other international federations which had signified their intention to support the PCF in the alleged conspiracy to strip it (PCF) of FIDE affiliation.

Although the FIDE Presidential Board recognized the NCFP last August, its status was only provisional and could only be affirmed by the FIDE Congress. The Olympiad starts Oct. 27.

PCF FIDE delegate Enofre Manuel and PCF secretary-general Edgar de Castro head the seven-man delegation, which also includes IMs Richard Bitoon, Enrique Paciencia and Jayson Gonzales, and NMs Petronio Roca and Rolly Martinez.
