Espinosa vs Mexican in Tyson card
October 17, 2000 | 12:00am
Former World Boxing Council featherweight champion Luisito Espinosa hits the comeback trail this Saturday when he battles Mexican Ramon Aragon in a 10-round preliminary bout on the Mike Tyson-Andrew Golota fight card.
The much-awaited Tyson-Golota war, which features two of today’s most feared and exciting heavyweights, will be telecast by Viva Vintage Sports on IBC-13 at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. The satellite coverage from Auburn Hills, Michigan also features Laila Ali, celebrated daughter of Muhammad Ali, taking on Kendra Lenhart in a middleweight tussle and IBF junior welterweight champion Zab Judah in his title defense against Hector "El Canonero" Quiroz.
Espinosa will be making his first ring appearance since losing the featherweight crown to hard-hitting Mexican Guty Espadas Jr. in Merida last May.
The WBC has ranked Espinosa as the number three featherweight in the world in its latest ratings. A big victory by Espinosa could set him up for a title shot at flamboyant Naseem Hamed who, despite his boasts, has been reluctant to tangle with the Filipino fighter.
The Espinosa-Aragon fight is one of the earliest on the Tyson-Golota undercard and is not included in the international TV schedule, but Viva Vintage Sports is currently negotiating with the fight’s presenter, Showtime Television, to have the highlights of the bout included in the satellite feed.
