Shark Energy Drink and Welcoat Paints clash today in what could be a preview of the championship even as Bingo Pilipino and Ana Freezers fight for survival in the semifinal round of the PBL Chairman's Cup at the Makati Coliseum.
The Power Boosters, who tote a pacesetting 11-2 (win-loss) card, try to get back at the Paintmasters in their 5:30 p.m. duel and move a win away from assuring themselves of a playoff for the last finals slot.
But the Paint Masters are out to make it three-in-a-row over the leaders this season and gain a share of the lead heading into the crucial phase of the semis.
Welcoat beat Shark, 74-61, last April 6 then reasserted its supremacy with a 70-61 win last May 13.
Bingo Pilipino and Ana Freezers collide at 3:30 p.m.
Still, coach Junel Baculi finds no reason to be overconfident.
"Shark surely wants to get back at us, but if the boys show up with the same intensity and character they showed in the past, I think we have a good chance again," said Welcoat coach Junel Baculi.
"This conference, naging kontra-pelo talaga ang Shark at Welcoat. Defensively and offensively, parehong malakas pero lamang lang sila (Welcoat) sa height because of Yancy" said Shark coach Leo Austria.
"They have the height, but I have the advantage at the wings. Magkakatalo lang siguro sa strategy. I mean, the team with the iron will, better breaks and doesn't wear down the stretch will have better chances, Austria added.
