Voltz rip Dragons in Guam encounter

-

The Iloilo Megavoltz made MBA history after winning the first overseas official game of the community-based league, humbling the Pampanga Dragons, 110-96, before a capacity crowd at the Guam Field House Sunday night.

Dale Singson and sweet-shooting Nestor Echano scattered 19 points apiece to lift the Solar Electric Co.-backed Iloilo team to its second successive win and a 3-7 win-loss mark in the ongoing MBA-FedEx Crossover Cup.

Ending the first half with a slim 49-48 edge, the Megavoltz electrified the Filipino cage fans in the US island territory with their sleek running game to bury the Dragons by 11 at the end of the third, 76-65.

And with the Megavoltz getting more balanced scoring from the bench the rest of the way, Pampanga failed to get back in the game in the final period to absorb its second setback in a row (5-4) following a 77-98 loss to Cagayan de Oro a week ago.

Ato Morano and Bong Alvarez led the Dragons with 21 points respectively.

Both teams were also part of the four-team Budweiser International cage meet with Games and Amusements Board (GAB) chief Dominador Cepeda Jr. accompanying the MBA delegation.

Meantime, Pampanga gets another chance at boosting its fast-fading bid to make it to the four-team cast that will dispute the Crossover conference title when the Dragons host Cebu tomorrow at the Bren Guiao Convention Center in San Fernandeo.

The other game will pit the streaking San Juan Knights against the Socsargen Marlins at 4 p.m. at the Gen. Santos City Gym.

The Knights and Cebuana-Lhuillier-supported Games are both favored to book victories tomorrow due to the their impressive performances over the weekend.

San Juan, whose stint in the league is supported by Andok's, stormed to its fifth straight win with an 87-61 rout of the Marlins at the San Juan Gym. Cebu is likewise fresh from a big win, after trouncing Nueva Ecija, 86-72 Sunday in Cabanatuan City.

Cebu coach Tonichi Yturri may also decide to finally field in former Iloilo gunner Riolito Lura, who was recently traded by the Megavoltz for Cebu defender Mike Almonte.
