FU spikers zero in on q'final berth

-

Foundation University pulled off twin feats yesterday with its men's team scoring three victories to move within a win from gaining a quarterfinal berth on the fourth Nestea Inter-collegiate beach volleyball tournament at the CCP Complex in Pasay.

Isidro Bongea, 21, and Edward Balbuena, 23, dominated their counterparts from Metro Manila College to give Foundation U an easy 12-1 victory, before outclassing their National College of Business Administration rivals for a 12-6 win.

The power-serving tandem then capped their explosive performance with a stunning 12-5 victory over the highly-touted pair of Roel Siladao and Jobert Bontigao of Far Eastern U-2 tandem.

Not to be outdone, Foundation's distaff side composed of sisters Nena and Neneth Abestano stopped University of the East with a 12-1 win for its fourth victory in five games.

The Abestanos came up with a win against National U twice, the first a 12-2 victory and the other a 12-1 rout, and over Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila while bowing to SSC's Patricia Sistan and Coney Recio, 9-12. They gun for a Boracay berth against Philippine Christian U's first team, which is still playing San Sebastian College at presstime.

Like SSC I, which won over Foundation and PCU 2, PCU I is also undefeated with two wins, the first at the expense of Philippine Normal University, and the other against UE, 12-10.

Meantime, Mapua's Lights Organization and SSC I advanced to the men's quarterfinals after taking the top two places in Thursday's first round of elims.

The qualifiers in the women's side were South Western U's Janeth Ponte and Marie Cinco, who finished first and second, respectively, Thursday.
