Dragons upset Slashers, fans

-

Angelo David capped his game-long brilliance with a short stab on an assist by Junel Mendiola with 4.9 seconds left to lift the visiting Pampanga Dragons to their third straight victory at the expense of the Negros Slashers, 90-89, yesterday in the 2000 MBA FedEx Cup at the University of St. La Salle gym in Bacolod City.

Maui Huelar actually tried to salvage the win for the local team by going coast to coast for an off-balanced jumper in the next play. He knocked in the tough shot but the referees ruled the basket went in with no time left in the clock.

As the referees signalled a no basket for Huelar, the Dragons erupted in a frenzied celebration while the Negros fans pelted the court with coins and debris in protest of the referees' verdict.

It was a sweet win for the Dragons who made a stirring comeback in the fourth quarter though ace forward Bong Alvarez was sidelined by a suspected torn meniscus sustained in a collision with a Negros defender early in the payoff period.

But the Manila Metrostars snapped the Davao Eagles' run at three with a smashing 103-90 victory at the Mail & More Sports Complex in San Andres.

It was the defending champions' third win in five starts.

Meanwhile, Bong Ravena makes his farewell performance with Pasig-Rizal before returning to the PBA Wednesday as the Pirates clash with the Socsargen Marlins at home today. -
