Letran gains NCAA sweep

-

First, it was basketball, followed by men's volleyball and lawn tennis then, came the track and field crown that closed the 75th edition of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). For the Letran Knights, and their Junior counterparts it's sweeter the second time around, copping the millennium honors this year.

The Knights amassed a total of 205 points with four championship trophies snared and three runner-up finishes in swimming, football and table tennis, way ahead of their closest pursuer, the PCU Dolphins who had 131 points.

The Squires, on the other hand, garnered 148 points, against 131 points of second-placer San Beda Red Cubs, in a head-to-head duel that was decided in the track and field meet. The Knights' counterpart ran away with championships in chess, lawn tennis and table tennis.

In track and field competition, the Knights took gold medals in high jump, pole vault, discus and javelin throw, shotput and dominated the middle and long distance competitions, behind the outstanding performances of Roy Jolito, Nestor Sanchez and Christopher Claur. PCU's Anthony Smith was adjudged tournament MVP as he garnered three golds and one silver, mostly in the running events.
