16 boto ang kailangan para ma-convict si VP Sara - Gatchalian

MANILA, Philippines — Labing-anim na boto ang kinakailangan para ma-convict si Vice President Sara Duterte sa impeachment trial.

Ito ang kinumpirma kahapon ni Acting Senate President at Senate President Pro Tempore Sherwin Gatchalian na ang 16 boto o 2/3 votes, ay mandato ng Saligang Batas at hindi apektado ng anumang alitan sa pamumuno sa liderato ng Senado.

“Article XI, Section 3(6) of the 1987 Constitution states unequivocally that no person shall be convicted without the concurrence of two-thirds of all the Members of the Senate,” sabi ni Gatchalian.

“With the Senate’s membership fixed at 24, the conviction threshold is 16 votes, and it will remain 16 votes regardless of how many senators attend the trial, which bloc controls the chamber, or who presides over the impeachment court,” diin niya.

Ginawa ni Gatchalian ang paglilinaw sa gitna ng leadership deadlock sa Senado, kung saan binubuo ng 12 senador ang Gatchalian-led bloc habang ang grupo naman ni Senador Alan Peter Cayetano ay may 10 senador.

Nauna nang sinabi ni Gatchalian na siya ang magiging presiding officer ng impeachment trial ni Duterte, subalit hindi sumuko si Cayetano at iginiit niya na siya ang lehitimong Senate President kaya siya pa rin umano ang presiding officer sa nalalapit na impeachment trial.

Nanindigan pa si Gatchalian sa legalidad ng pagbuo ng bagong Senate majority bloc na kinikilala rin ng Malacañang at ng House of Representatives.

Itinakda ang Senate impeachment court sa ilalim ng liderato ni Gatchalian ang pre-trial conference sa Hunyo 18, kung saan inatasan ang parehong kampo ni Duterte at House prosecution panel na magsumite ng kanilang pre-trial briefs sa Hunyo 15 at ang trial proper ay sisimulan sa Hulyo 6, 2026.
