Kalanggaman earns P18.5M in tourism

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — Kalanggaman Island, the prime tourist attraction in Palompon town of Leyte, has earned over P18 million last year, according to a report from the Leyte provincial government’s office.

Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla told The Freeman, in an interview, that based on the reports of the Palompon local government unit to the Provincial Tourism Office, the tourists who visited Kalanggaman Island,  contributed P18.5 million to the economy of this town and to the province as well.

Petilla said Kalanggaman Island, now considered as Leyte’s main island tourist destination, is just a 45-minute boat ride from the town proper of Palompon.  He added that the 6-hectare island is surrounded by fine white sand, with a  long stretch of sandbar, and some areas covered with pebbles, coarse sand, and coconut trees.

The number of tourists visiting Kalanggaman Island has been increasing through the years, thus the corresponding increase of revenues, said the governor.

Records show that last year, 101,312 tourists visited Kalanggaman Island, higher than the 95,677 in 2016. The records further show that last year the revenue of P18.5 million was higher by P2 million compared to the 2016 receipts. (FREEMAN)
