Construction worker kills school janitor in Igbaras, Iloilo due to lechon

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A left-over roasted pig (lechon) drove a construction worker to allegedly attack a school janitor in Igbaras town of Iloilo.

The suspect, Jose Escosado, 50, of Barangay Pinaopawan in Igbaras, reportedly struck Alfredo Encio on the head with a flower pot made of rubber.

Encio, 56, a resident of Barangay Dos, also in Igbaras, was employed as administrative aide of the Igbaras National High School but performed janitorial jobs.

Police investigation said the incident happened in the presence of Mark Anthony Licos, 26, of Alimodian town, who is Escosado’s fellow construction worker, both working on a building being constructed inside the campus.

Police report said that, shortly past midnight of May 21, Escosado allegedly went to the bunk house and woke up Licos, asking the latter to accompany him somewhere.

When they saw Encio, Escosado confronted the former about the missing head of a roasted pig, which was served earlier in the day during an alumni homecoming event in the school.

The left-over lechon was allegedly entrusted to Escosado by an alumus, along with several bottles of beer.

Escosado brought the bottles of beer home but got angry when he found that the lechon was missing, suspecting Encio as the one responsible. The suspect then struck the janitor on the head.

Inspector Seferino Gelpe, Igbaras Police chief, said Licos did nothing to prevent the incident. “He could have confederated with Escosado in killing the victim,” he added.

The two fled after the incident but they were arrested. Gelpe said a case for murder was filed against the suspect on Tuesday. —(BANAT NEWS)
