Habitat builds homes for earthquake victims
TAGBILARAN CITY , Philippines — Saying “adequate shelter is a basic human right†and “helping create a world where everyone has a decent place to live,†Habitat for Humanity Foundation, Inc. is literally building roofs and raising hopes for the victims of magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Bohol on Oct. 15, 2013.
The quake left 210 dead, thousands of families homeless in more than half of Bohol’s 47 towns. Private properties and infrastructures, particularly the centuries-old churches, are still in shambles that would entail billions of pesos needed and years to rebuild them.
Habitat is not only building these houses the quake victims who may call their own, but also multi-purpose centers in six towns, update received by this writer yesterday provided by Charlie Ayco, Habitat for Humanity chief executive officer, showed. These towns where these multipurpose centers are to be erected are Loboc, Antequera, Catigbian, Sagbayan, Loon and Inabanga.
Aside from this commitment, Habitat also aims to build up church convents that were badly damaged by the tremor in Barangay Busao, Maribojoc town and Antequera, Bohol. Needed documents are being readied and validated for the start of the construction soon.
The foundation also embarked on lighting of some 200 houses and 33 street lights using the “Liter-of-lights†technology in Barangay Napo, Loon, Bohol and other places.
A total of 119 of what it called “core shelters†are already in progress located in priority quake victims in 17 hardest hit municipalities, it said. (FREEMAN)
