ORMOC CITY, Philippines - — A baker of a bakeshop suffered 2nd degree burns during a fire that struck the commercial district of this city Tuesday evening, lasting for more than six hours.

Inspector Hermes Cadion, city deputy fire marshal, said his office received the fire alert at about 6:48 p.m., and immediately dispatched his men to the scene, at corner Burgos and Real Streets. A fire-out was declared at 1:28 a.m. Wednesday.

Cadion said, “Kibitzers and opportunistic people milling around the scene were the main problem of our firefighters. We can’t operate well with all these people occupying our working space.”

The origin of the fire was an LPG leakage from a bakeshop, Cadion said, adding that the scene was within the central part of the city where concrete buildings and eight business establishments were located.

The Bureau of Fire Protection estimated the damage to property at P4.98 million. There were no fatalities but the one injured was identified as Ritchie Castante, a baker of the bakeshop that was among those gutted by the fire.  (FREEMAN)
