Flashflood drowns man

Judy Flores Partlow - The Freeman

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — The body of a man, who went missing early this week after he was reportedly carried downstream by flashfloods triggered by the low pressure area affecting the country, was recovered by rescuers at a downstream portion of a river in Pamplona, Negros Oriental.

A police report identified the victim as Paulino Claro, 48, a resident of Brgy. Banawe, Pamplona. His wife Vilma first told the police he was carried away by strong currents Monday afternoon when he crossed the river.

Rescue and retrieval operations by the municipal disaster risk reduction and management council of Pamplona resulted in the recovery of Claro's body Tuesday afternoon at a downstream portion of the river at sitio Manaol in Brgy. Sta. Agueda of Pamplona.

Claro's body was recovered by rescuers the following day, Tuesday afternoon at a downstream portion of the river at Sitio Manaol in Barangay Sta. Agueda, Pamplona town.

Claro was the first casualty reported in the province as the low pressure area, which caused continuous downpour and flooding in many parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.

Governor Roel Degamo called on his constituents through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to be vigilant and take the precautionary measures against landslides and flooding. (FREEMAN)
