German kids share Christmas with Yolanda children survivors

Rommel L. Rutor - The Philippine Star

CATBALOGAN CITY, SAMAR, Philippines — A group of children composed of altar boys and choir in Udem. Germany baked some cookies and sold it for them to earn money to be able to help children survivors of typhoon Yolanda.

"The cookies were best sellers, and these children really showed their effort in baking for the children who are victims of the super typhoon that hit the Philippines," said Marichi Spiegelhoff, owner of Spiegelhoff Backerie in Uedem.

All of the proceeds, which totaled to about 640 euros or roughly P37,000, were donated to a local radio station based in Samar that had been calling for help for Yolanda children survivors, who together with their families, have migrated to this city.

Spiegelhoff said her bakeshop was just a conduit of the Uedem kids who wanted to share the spirit of sharing this yuletide season to the children the Leyte and Samar affected by Yolanda.

The Freeman gathered that, earlier this month, Spiegelhoff Backerie likewise spearheaded a fund raising campaign with its patrons for the Yolanda-affected families in Eastern Visayas.

More than 200 gift bags---containing assorted school supplies, school uniforms, slippers, medicines, hygiene kits, toys, foodies and cash---were distributed by Bantay Probinsiya, the local conduit in Samar of the Spiegelhoff  Backerie.

"It's not done yet, we still have more than 70 gift bags left here, and we are still eyeing of coming up with another 50 bags to be delivered on or before New Year," said Liwayway Sabuco, who managed the distribution of the gift bags for the local radio program Bantay Probinsiya. —(FREEMAN)
