UNA senatorial bets set Reg. 8’s campaign salvo

Edgar Allan Vilbar - The Freeman

BAYBAY CITY, Philippines — The entire senatorial slate of the United Nationalist Alliance will be in this southwestern part of Leyte tomorrow (April 8) for their proclamation rally in Eastern Visayas.

This was disclosed by Marilou “Malot” Galenzoga of the local UNA, who is running for the city’s mayoralty post against the incumbent mayor, who is the matriarch of the so-called Loreto-Cari dynasty.

The event is expected to be the biggest gathering of political stalwarts in the region because all opposition candidates (UNA or non-UNA) from all over Eastern Visayas have already signified their intention to attend.

Reporters from at least 30 media outlets, including those from Metro Manila, have already booked themselves in advance in hotels and pension houses in the city.

Galenzoga said the coming of the senatorial bets will not only for them to campaign, but also to make a statement about the seriousness of her intention to “kausaban (change)” of the present political landscape of the city that have direly affected the lives of her fellow Baybayanons.

She said that, for 32 years, members of the Cari-Petilla-Loreto clan have been holding offices in this city and the 5th district of Leyte, as grandmother, sons, in-laws, grandsons, nephews and cousins lording over the people, with alleged voracity of power more than the latter’s welfare.

They (Cari-Loreto) were never threatened politically until now with my entry into the political arena with the determination to change for the better the people’s future, Galenzoga said.

A motorcade of UNA bets around the city and a press conference will precede the 7 p.m. rally at the city’s Veterans Park, she added. (FREEMAN)
