20th Panaad sa Negros Festival starts April 8

Danny B. Dangcalan - The Freeman

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines  â€” Now on its 20th year, the weeklong Panaad sa Negros Festival kicks off tomorrow, April 8, and will run until April 14.

The Panaad Festival, annually held at the 25-hectare Panaad Park and Sports Complex in Brgy. Mansilingan of this city, is dubbed the “Festival of All Festivals” as it is a convergence of the different festivals of 13 cities and 19 towns around Negros Occidental province.

During the opening ceremonies at 4 p.m. tomorrow, each of the 32 local government units will present its festival in the Festival Dances Competition.

The LGUs will also showcase, in their respective pavilions, their major products, heritage, art and culture, in what could be like a virtual tour of the whole province.

Another major event is the Lin-ay Sang Negros (Lady of Negros), to be staged on April 12, where festival queens of the 32 LGUs compete for the coveted beauty title for 2013.

“Panaad” is Hiligaynon for “vow and its fulfillment,” while the festival itself is a form of thanksgiving celebration for the good life that Negrenses have been blessed with all these years.

With the theme, “Panaad@20: Celebrating Negros as the Philippine Leader in Organic Agriculture,” the festival promotes organic agriculture as the main thrust of the provincial government towards making Negros Occidental the “Organic Food Capital of Asia.”  (FREEMAN)
