Ormoc's 6th most wanted shot dead

- Edgar Allan Vilbar - The Philippine Star

ORMOC CITY, Philippines – This city’s 6th most wanted person, who went into hiding in Palompon town after being charged with murder a few years ago, was finally cornered by city policemen, but was gunned down after fighting it out with the authorities.

The slain suspect, Charito Alquino, was charged with murder (Crim Case No. R-ORM-08-00098) with no bail recommended, under the sala of Judge Apolinario Buaya of RTC-branch 35 in this city.

Alquino was initially surprised when the operatives, led by Sr. Supt. Elizar Egloso of the Ormoc City Police Office, accosted him on the night of October 11 in his hiding place at Bgy. Hinagbuan of Palompon, Leyte.

Senior Insp. Mark Nalda, OCPO Police Community Relations officer, narrated to The Freeman that the police waited for three hours at Alquino’s house until the latter arrived at 7 p.m.

The official police statement released on Friday (Oct.12) stated that Chief Insp. Ibrahim Jambiran, OCPO Intelligence Branch chief, and PO2 Hydie Yutrago were the ones who approached to introduce themselves to Alquino.

Instead of surrendering, however, Alquino drew his .38-caliber revolver and shot Jambiran, but missed.

This prompted Jambiran to return fire, hitting Alquino in different parts of the body, resulting in the latter’s death, as confirmed by doctors of the Palompon District Hospital where the suspect was taken after the incident.

Police Regional Office-8 director Elmer Soria, in his congratulatory message to the officers involved in the operation, sighted the good performance of OCPO that contributed to the attainment of the PNP mission of providing the people a peaceful community. (FREEMAN)
