DUMAGUETE CITY , Philippines – A magnitude-3.9 earthquake shook Tayasan town and other parts of northern Negros Oriental at 6:39 a.m. Friday, a report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in nearby Sibulan town said.
Joe Molas, science research analyst of Phivolcs-Sibulan station confirmed that the aftershock tremor was measured at a depth of 0.17 kilometers, closer at about 0.4 kilometers north of the town.
The aftershock was felt at Intensity 3 in Tayasan while other areas like Ayungon, La Libertad and Jimalalud towns also felt the quake at various intensities, he said.
Molas said aftershocks continue in the northern part of Negros Oriental, and Phivolcs’ seismic monitoring network has recorded at least one aftershock daily, but only at magnitude one or below that is hardly felt by humans.
He added that it is better to have aftershocks felt regularly to ease the pressure and avoid accumulation of strength. (FREEMAN)
