Valencia LGU speeds up restoration of water supply

- Syril G. Repe -

VALENCIA, NEGROS ORIENTAL, Philippines  – Works on the restoration of water supply in this town is now being fast-tracked to solve the lack of water for 90 percent of the population.

Mayor Ricky Gonzalez said the flashfloods caused by typhoon Sendong have cut off major water distribution lines located at the mountainous part of the town.

The municipal government, through the Valencia Water District, has been doing its best to restore the water supply, the major source of which is in Maiti, an interior area that could be reached by workers via a six-hour walk.

Gonzalez said he asked the Philippine Army to send its men to hasten the delivery of construction materials, such as PVC pipes, to the source site. The rehabilitation of the Valencia Waterworks System covering seven major water sources, would cost P70 million, he said.

At this time, tanker trucks from the Valencia Fire Department and volunteer fire brigades have been getting water from the Dumaguete City Water District to provide the needs of Valencia constituents, Gonzales said. (FREEMAN)
