Dumaguete observes 2011 World AIDS Day

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines – The City Health workers pinned small red ribbons to every City Hall employees, department heads and city officials on Thursday morning when the city joined the world in observance of the 2011 World AIDS Day.

The event was a yearly activity worldwide to create awareness on AIDS and HIV, sympathize with the victims and find for a permanent treatment of the dreaded disease.

City Health officer Sarah Talla also urged business establishments, government offices, NOGs and the public to display the red ribbon and wear red to show care for AIDS and HIV patients.

“The red ribbon is the international symbol for AIDS awareness, which is actually worn by advocates year-round to demonstrate care and concern about HIV and AIDS, and remind everyone of the need for support and commitment,” said Talla.

Talla however said the city’s actual celebration of World AIDS Day will be next Friday, December 9, to adjust to the availability of the guest speaker by then.

On that date, the scheduled speaker will be an HIV-infected person who would share his experience and shed light on the virus.

There will be a program starting in the afternoon at the Quezon Park with a short program, and then a parade along the city streets with the participation of NGO members, students, barangay health workers and barangay officials, city government officials and employees.

The activity will culminates with the awarding of prizes for best in costume and biggest contingent, among others. (FREEMAN)
