Leyte PB bans billboards, signage on trees
BAYBAY CITY ,Philippines - The Leyte Provincial Board recently approved unanimously an ordinance prohibiting the fastening, bolting, posting, tying or nailing of any kind of signage on trees in public places around the province.
PB Member Florante "Junjun" Cayunda (5th district) told The FREEMAN that the ordinance was authored by PB member Roque Tiu (1st dist.) who said this was in support of the National Greening Program of President PNoy Aquino.
Tiu, in explaining his ordinance, said posting billboards can wound the barks of trees make the latter vulnerable to fungi and bacteria which could eventually kill them.
Cayunda said Tiu earlier invited experts on this field to enlighten the PB on the matter before the approval of the ordinance.
Violators of the provisions of the ordinance shall be meted penalties from P500 to P5,000 and imprisonment.
