Historic moment for Cebu’s Cabañero brothers in UAAP
CEBU, Philippines — Cebuano brothers Nic and Andwele Cabañero etched their name in stone after making it to the Mythical Five in their respective divisions in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.
It’s the first time in UAAP’s 87-year history that a pair of siblings achieved such record feat.
Cabañero earned a spot in the Mythical Team selection with an average of 16.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game in leading the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers to a third-place honors in the seniors category
Nic’s younger brother Andwele also shined brightly, winding up second in the MVP race while helping the Tiger Cubs to a silver-medal finish in the juniors level.
Andwele normed 16.86 points, 9.43 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.79 steals per game to secure a seat in the elite Mythical 5.
“We are so blessed to have a very supportive parents who constantly guide us along the way,” said Nic Cabañero. “I do hope na maka-inspire mi og more athletes with what we have accomplished.”
“We are also thankful to UST and our respective teams because without them, dili namo makuha ang award. Our dream is to build a legacy for the greater glory of our school and God.
