November 4 declared non-working day in Quezon province
MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang has declared Nov. 4 as a special non-working day in Quezon province for the commemoration of the death anniversary of Apolinario dela Cruz, or Hermano Puli.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the province of Quezon be given full opportunity to honor the heroism and patriotism of Hermano Puli through appropriate ceremonies,” Proclamation 730, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, read.
Born in Lucban, Dela Cruz was a religious leader who founded and led the Cofradía de San José in 1832, in response to the “racism” of the Catholic Church.
Dela Cruz established his own religious order exclusive for native Filipinos.
After the Cofradia’s defeat, Dela Cruz was captured in Sariaya. He was taken to Tayabas where he was tried and executed on Nov. 4, 1841, according to the National Archives of the Philippines.
