All set for inaugural DH25 men’s open volleyball tilt

CEBU, Philippines — It’s green and go for the first ever DH25 Men’s Open Volleyball Tournament set to kick off on Friday, September 13, either at the University of Cebu-Maritime Education Training Center (UC-METC) in Barangay Mambaling or at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Gym in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City.

The organizers headed by acting Cebu City Vice Mayor Dondon Hontiveros formally launched the event at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

A good mix of high school and college varsity players and commercial spikers will be competing in the three-day tilt that offers a total of P80,000 in cash prize to the winners.

In all, tournament manager Blake Diao said 20 teams divided into four groups of five will vie for the coveted title and the bragging rights as the best volleyball squad in the province.

Reigning Governor’s Cup champion Naga Atong Garbo is in Bracket A together with the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats,  WFW Bankers, Endrablos, and Lowkey Cebu.

The Dracarys, Don Pablo, UC Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, University of San Jose-Recoletos Khalifa, and Amigos will slug it out in Bracket B, while  the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors , Oras Punto Diagnostics, UC Valyrians, Assassins, and Safelinx All-Stars make up Bracket C.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office 7, Ribshack, UC High School, San Fernando Volitans, and the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu compose Bracket D.

The champion will take home P50,000, while the second to fourth placers will pocket P15,000, P10,000, and P5,000, respectively.

With the huge turnout, Hontiveros is already entertaining the idea of holding a much bigger competition that will include the women’s division in the future. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (FREEMAN)
