Philippine boxers tuloy sa Jordan qualifying

MANILA, Philippines — Inaasahan ng Association Boxing Alliances of the Philippines na hindi na madidiskaril ang pagdaraos ng Olympic Qualifying Tournament sa Amman, Jordan sa Pebrero 29 hanggang Marso 12.

Nakatakdang magtu-ngo sa susunod na linggo ang limang lalaki at tatlong babaeng miyembro ng national boxing team sa nasabing Asian at Oceanic qualifying na nauna nang nakansela bunga ng banta ng coronavirus.

Orihinal na iniskedyul ang nasabing torneo para sa 2020 Olympic Games, gagawin sa Tokyo, Japan sa Hulyo 24 hanggang Agosto 9, sa Wuhan, China noong Pebrero 3 hanggang 14 bago nagdesisyon ang  International Olympic Committee-Boxing Task Force na ilipat ito sa Amman, Jordan.

Pangungunahan ni World Championship gold medalist Nesthy Petecio ang kampanya ng national squad sa kanyang pagsabak sa women’s featherweight division.

Susuntok naman sina Irish Magno at Riza Pasuit sa flyweight at lightweight category, ayon sa pagkakasunod.

Ang men’s team ay binubuo nina Southeast Asian Games gold me-dal winners Eumir Felix Marcial (middleweight), Carlo Paalam (flyweight), Rogen Ladon (flyweight), Ian Clark Bautista (featherweight) at James Palicte (lightweight).

Kabuuang 41 Olympic slots ang pag-aagawan sa men’s division at 22 naman sa women’s category ng Asia-Oceania qualifiers.

Ang ikalawang Olympic qualifier, ang World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, ay nakatakda sa Paris sa Mayo.

Sina World Gymnastics champion Carlos Edriel Yulo at pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena pa lamang ang pasok sa 2020 Tokyo Games.
