PATAFA athletes pa-Australia para mag-training

MANILA, Philippines – Sisimulan nang ipadala ng Philippine Track and Field Association ang kanilang mga atleta para mag-training sa abroad para sa asam na makapagdagdag ng lahok sa Rio Olympics na makakasama ni Fil-Am hurdler Eric Shaun Cray.

Inihayag ni Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association president Philip Ella Juico na aalis na sa susunod na linggo sina runner Melvin Guarte, relay specialist Edgardo Alejan at steeplechaser Christopher Ulboc patungong Perth, Australia para magsanay ng tatlong buwan.

“We’re sending them to Perth next week because we want to maximize our chances of qualifying more athletes to the Olympics,” sabi ni Juico.

Naipadala na ng PATAFA si pole vaulter EJ Obiena sa Poland noong December  na siyang may malakas na tsansang makasama sa Rio Olympics.

“He’s been training in Poland under coach Vitaly Petrov since December 19 and will do so until January 18,” sabi ni Juico ukol kay Obiena na lalahok para sa UAAP sa  Asian Indoor Championship sa Qatar sa Feb. 17.

Nagsasanay naman si long jumper Marestella Torres sa ilalim ng pri-badong grupo hangad na Olympic slot.

Si Cray pa lang ang Pinoy na nakasisiguro sa Rio  matapos maabot ang qualifying standard sa isang karera sa Los Angeles noong nakaraang taon.

Naorasan si Cray, isang Southeast Asian Games gold medallist, ng 49.12 seconds sa 400-meter hurdles, para lampasan ang 49.40-second Olympic qualifying standard. (JV)
