Gabuco, Barriga at Fernandez nagbida sa Team Phl: Boxers sumuntok ng tatlong ginto

NAY PYI TAW – Dahil sa nakamit na tatlong gintong medalya sa boxing event ay umakyat ang Team Philippines sa pang-pitong puwesto mula sa pagiging No. 8 sa overall medal standings sa 27th Southeast Asian Games kahapon dito. 

Sumuntok ng gold medal sa kani-kanilang weight division sina light flyweight Josie Gabuco, light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga at bantamweight Mario Fernandez.

Umiskor si Gabuco ng 40-36, 40-36, 38-38 panalo kontra kay Beatrix Suguro ng Indonesia, habang nagposte si Barriga ng 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 tagumpay laban kay Konelis Langu ng Indonesia.

Hindi naman nagpahuli si Fernandez matapos bug­bugin si Donchai Tathi ng Thailand, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28.

Samantala, nabigo si welterweight Wilfredo Lopez na makapagbigay ng gintong medalya nang matalo kay Kristianus Ina ng Myanmar.

Nagkaroon ng putok si Lopez sa kanyang kanang kilay.

“Lamang na lamang tayo pero biglang itinigil ng referee nu’ng may nakitang putok sa kanang kilay si Wilfredo,” ani coach Nolito Velasco. “Kaya pa naman eh. Maliit lang ‘yung putok, puwede pang ilaban.”

Nag-ambag naman ng bronze medals sina flyweight Maricris Igam at bantamweight Irish Magno ka­gaya nina Joanna Mae Ylanan sa women’s -68kg ku­mite sa karatedo at GM Joey Antonio sa Internatio­nal individual blitz ng chess.

Pumangatlo sina dating world champion Efren “Ba­ta” Reyes at Francisco dela Cruz matapos matalo sa kanilang mga Vietnamese rivals, habang yumukod si Iris Rañola kay Magdaena, 4-7, sa kanilang 9-ball quarterfinals match.

Kaagad namang napatalsik sa labanan si weightlifter Jeffrey Garcia (62kg class) at sina karatekas John Michael Badil (-75kg), Rexor Romaquin (-67kg) Princess Diane Sicangco (-61kg) at Jason Macaalay (-60kg).

Sasandal ang Team Philippines sa billiards, chess, cycling’s road race, weightlifting, karatedo at athletics.
