CEBU, Philippines — Cebu’s Chase Tower Runs basketball team etched its name in stone as the first ever champion of Dayo 23 Streetball Invitational Tournament.

CTR owned by shipping magnate and social media influencer Chase Cokaliong edged past Team HoopX of Manila, 23-21, in the thrilling race-to-23 finale to grab the historic crown of the inaugural tilt last Sunday, May 19,  at the Brgy. 830 covered court in Pandacan, Manila.

Froilan Mangubat lived up to his lofty billing as “3-Point King” of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) during his time with the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors two years ago by knocking in the winning 2-pointer for CTR in the closely-fought championship battle that could gone either way.

The Cebuano hardcourt warriors pocketed P300,000 for their efforts.

Aside from Mangubat, the CTR squad under the guidance of head coach Paul Joven is powered by Ice Hontiveros and Jancork Cabahug. They all made it to the elite Dayo 23 Mythical Team.

“It was an honor to be one of the players who represented Cebu for Dayo 23. I’m grateful to boss Chase Cokaliong for his trust and support. All the teams were strong and we all tried our best in each game. It wasn’t an easy fight but we’re very happy that we won and became champions for Cebu . Bisaya represent!” said Cabahug.

Also in Team CTR are former basketball star turned public servant Dondon Hontiveros,  ex-University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers All-Star center Jerome Napao, former CESAFI Slam Dunk champion Miguel “The Cebuano Rocket” Gastador of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, and erstwhile collegiate standouts Mac Racho (Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras), Paul Galinato (University of Cebu Webmasters), and Dolan Adlawan (USC Warriors).  — (FREEMAN)
