PAGASA monitors 2 LPAs

MANILA, Philippines — Two low-pressure areas with “unlikely” chances of developing into tropical cyclones are being monitored by state weather forecasters.

Up to four cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility in August, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geo- physical and Astronomical Services Administration.

In September, up to three cy- clones are expected and two in each of the following months.

PAGASA said the decline in its projection is due to a potentially very strong ElNiño event, described as unprecedented amid the Pacific Ocean’s rapid warming.

While fewer tropical cyclones are expected due to El Niño, they may still develop into typhoons or even supertyphoons.

If four cyclones develop, they will be named Luis, Maymay, Neneng and Obet.

Meanwhile, Education Sec- retary Sonny Angara has led a series of nationwide stake- holder consultations on a proposed executive order to update guidelines for class and work suspensions and

resumptions during emergencies.

Angara said the proposed EO aims to establish a frame- work governing when in- person classes and onsite work are suspended and when they can safely resume. In another development, a Philippine Airlines flight from Manila-Cauayan-Manila was canceled yesterday due to bad weather, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said. – Bella Cariaso, Rudy Santos
