Suyom sumuntok ng pilak sa World Youth
MANILA, Philippines — Sumuntok si promising boxer Ronel Suyom ng pilak na medalya sa prestihiyosong World Youth Championships na ginanap sa La Nucia, Spain.
Nagtala ang 17-anyos Cagayan de Oro pride ng upset win para masiguro ang pilak sa torneong nilahukan ng mahigit 500 boxers mula sa 73 bansa.
Kabilang sa mga tinalo ni Suyom si European Youth champion Rafael Lozano Serrano ng Spain kung saan naitala ng Pinoy bet ang impresibong 5-0 panalo.
Ngunit hindi pinalad si Suyom sa gold-medal match matapos yumuko kay Suresh Vishvanath sa finals via split decision, 1-4.
“Ronel looked a bit overwhelmed and could have stuck to the fight plan more. This is his first trip out of the Philippines after all, but he is young, talented and willing to learn. We will put him on a stringent strength and conditioning plan to toughen him up even more,” ani ABAP training director Don Abnett.
Pinuri ni ABAP chairman Ricky Vargas ang ipinamalas ng boxing team.
“The future looks bright for Philippine boxing. Let’s stay focused and give our boxers the opportunities they need,” ani Vargas.
