MANILA, Philippines — Nasa kritikal na kondisyon ngayon si dating Asia’s sprint queen Lydia de Vega dahil sa komplikasyon dulot ng Stage 4 breast cancer.
Sa kanyang Instagram post ay humingi ng dasal at tulong pinansyal ang kanyang anak na si Stephanie Mercado-de Koenigswarter.
“She was diagnosed with this in 2018, and has been silently fighting the disease for the past four years,” wika ni Mercado-de Koenigswarter na naglaro ng collegiate volleyball para sa La Salle Lady Spikers at sa club team na Petro Gazz.
“As the disease is progressing, her condition is quickly worsening despite undergoing many procedures including brain surgery,” dagdag nito.
Siyam na gold medals ang itinakbo ni De Vega sa Southeast Asian Games at dalawa sa Asian Games.
Tinawag si De Vega na ‘Asia’s Sprint Queen’ nang pagreynahan ang women’s 100m at 200m ng Asian Athletics Championship noong 1983 at 1987 at sa 100m noong 1982 at 1986 Asian Games.
Ang huling public appearance ni De Vega ay sa opening ceremony ng 2019 Manila Southeast Asian Games.
