VIGAN, Ilocos Sur  , Philippines  — Ang karangalan sa pag-angkin sa unang gintong medalya sa 2018 Palarong Pambansa ang pag-aagawan ngayong araw dito sa President Elpidio Quirino Stadium.

Nakalatag ang walong gintong medalya sa track and field sa secondary girls' 3,000m run, secondary boys' at girls' javelin throw, elementary boys' at girls' shot put, secondary boys' at elementary girls' long jump at elementary boys' triple jump.

Bukas sa swimming pool ay pag-aagawan naman ang 16 gold medals sa elementary boys' at girls' 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 4x50m medley relay at sa secondary boys' at girls' 400m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m butterfly at 4x50m medley relay.

Ang iba pang events na nasa kalendaryo ng 2018 Palarong Pambansa ay ang archery, arnis, badminton, baseball, basketball, billiards, boxing, chess, football, futsal, gymnastics, sepak takraw, softball, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, wrestling at wushu.

Nakasama naman ni Presidente Rodrigo Duterte sa makulay na opening ceremony sina Ilocos Sur Gov. Ryan Singson, Vice Gov. Jeremias Singson, Bantay Mayor Samuel Parilla II, Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones at sina Philippine Sports Commissio­ners Ramon Fernandez, Charles Maxie, Celia Kiram at Arnold Agustin.

Kabuuang 1,311 medalya kasama ang 397 ginto ang nakataya sa 21 regular events.

Ang mga demonstration sports ay ang aero gymnastics, dancesports at pencak silat.

Ang bilang ng medalya ang pagbabasehan para sa paghirang sa overall champion.

Target ng National Capital Region ang kanilang pang-15 sunod na overall championship na inaasahang pilit na hahadlangan ng 16 pang rehiyon.
