CEBU, Philippines — Nearly 1,000 driver’s licenses of erring motorists nationwide were revoked by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for various offenses in 2024, most of them are violations related to driving while under the influence of liquor.

“We have a total of 984 driver’s licenses revoked in 2024. Lahat po ito ay dumaan sa tamang proseso ng due process,” said LTO Chief Vigor D. Mendoza II.

Citing LTO data, Mendoza said a total of 736 driver’s licenses were revoked for violations of Republic Act (RA) 10586 (Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act), which included driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs/substance, and refusal to subject oneself to mandatory alcohol test during road crash.

Some 130 driver’s licenses were also revoked for violation of RA 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, particularly due to questionable ways of obtaining driver’s licenses.

A total of 94 driver’s licenses were revoked for violation of the provisions of RA 10930, the law that extended the validity of driver’s license. The violations included having double licenses, falsification of documents and cheating during examinations.

Meanwhile, a total of 24 driver’s licenses were also revoked over viral videos on social media and other complaints lodged before the LTO Central Office.

“Let this also serves as a warning that your LTO will not hesitate to suspend and revoke as many driver’s licenses if it would lead to the safety of all road users. Always remember that the driver's license we issue is a privilege, kaya magtulungan po tayo,” Mendoza said, adding that his office has intensified the advocacy of Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista on road safety.

Mendoza hopes that for this year motorists will now be more responsible and disciplined.

“We hope that this year, there will be no minimal or even zero administrative cases with driver’s license revocation as a penalty because we, in the LTO, want all our motorists to be responsible and disciplined while using our roads,” said Mendoza.

Earlier, the LTO reported that a total of 639,323 motorists were apprehended for various violations while a total of 29,709 motor vehicles were impounded in 2024.(CEBU NEWS)
