CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue City Council yesterday approved on first reading a proposed ordinance seeking to grant P500 increase in the monthly honorarium of the 900 clean and green workers of the city.

Recognizing the health hazards the clean and green workers endure everyday, Councilor Jen del Mar is pushing to increase their honorarium from P4,000 a month to P4,500.

“Rain or shine manglimpyo gyud na sila. Sayo ni sila mangmata, manilhig sa kadalanan,” said del Mar, the principal author of the proposed measure.

According to her, the clean and green workers were last granted an crease in 2015.

“Ilang honorarium karon kay considered volunteers man sila is P4,000 for past nine years, nimahal na baya ron ang mga paliton, it’s about time na pud atong pun-an ang ilang honorarium,” del Mar said.

The proposed measure acknowledged the help of clean and green personnel in ensuring that the streets of Mandaue City are clean. By making sure that the streets are clean, they have also contributed in lessening traffic accidents by getting rid of unwanted objects on the streets that may hinder the flow of traffic and to a certain extent cause accident.

Del Mar said that in the past nine years cost of living has drastically increased due to inflation and several other economic factors, thus, the need to provide an increase in the honorarium of the clean and green personnel for them to cope with the rising prices of basic needs.

“By increasing the honorarium of the Clean and Green Personnel, they will be more appreciative of their tasks and duties which should theoretically also enable them to serve with more enthusiasm and render more satisfactory performance,” the proposed ordinance stated. — (FREEMAN)
