'3 years in a row': Pilipinas ika-7 sa mundo sa unsolved media killings
MANILA, Philippines — Sa ikatlong sunod na taon, napanatili ng Pilipinas ang ranggo nito sa "Global Impunity Index" ng Community to Protect Journalists — bagay na nagtatala ng mga pinakamalalang bansa pagdating sa hindi nalulutas na pagpatay sa mga kawani ng media.
Namonitor ng CPJ sa 2022 Global Impunity Index na inilabas ngayong Martes ang 14 "unsolved murders" sa Pilipinas sa pagitan ng Setyembre 2012 hanggang Agosto ng taong kasalukuyan.
"In the Philippines — which ranked seventh on the index — the election of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. brought hope of a shift away from outgoing President Rodrigo
Duterte’s campaign of intimidation and harassment of the press," sabi ng ulat CPJ.
"However, the murders of two radio commentators — Percival Mabasa, a vocal critic of Duterte and Marcos Jr., and Renato Blanco, who reported on local politics and corruption — since Marcos Jr. took office in late June raised fears that the culture of violence and impunity will endure."

Nasa 15 beses nang lumalabas sa index ang Pilipinas simula nang i-compile ito ng grupo noon pang 2008.
Kinalkula ang ranggo ng mga bansa gamit ang dami ng mga hindi pa nareresolbang kaso ng journalist killings bilang porsyento ng kabuuang populasyon.
Tanging ang mga bansang may lima pataas na bilang ng unsolves cases ang isinasama sa index.

"CPJ defines murder as a deliberate killing of a specific journalist in retaliation for the victim’s work. This index does not include cases of journalists killed in combat or while on dangerous assignments, such as coverage of protests that turn violent," sabi pa nila.
"Cases are considered unsolved when no convictions have been obtained, even if suspects have been identified and are in custody."
Tinatala lang sa index ang mga pagpatay kung saan nangyayari ang "complete impunity." Hindi isinasama ang mga kaso kung saan nakamit na ang partial justice. Ginamit sa pag-aaral ang population data ng World Bank sa kanilang 2021 World Development Indicators.
Kasalukuyan pa ring gumugulong ang kaso ni Mabasa, na siyang tinambangan nitong ika-3 ng Oktubre habang papunta sa kanyang trabaho. Una nang sumuko ang diumano'y gunman sa kanyang pagkamatay habang marami pa rin ang "at large."
Bagama't meron nang sumuko at in custody na ang ilan sa mga suspek at persons of interest, wala pa ring convicted sa mga nabanggit para sa pagpatay.
Mayo lang nang bumagsak sa ika-174 na pwesto ang Pilipinas sa 2022 World Press Freedom Index ng Reporters Without Borders. — James Relativo
