Wala halos tinira sa mga kalaban Bonifacio literal na naghakot ng awards; Allen Dizon wagi ring Best Actor sa MMFF
Ang biopic ni Andres Bonifacio na Bonifacio, Ang Unang Pangulo at ang romantic comedy na English Only, Please ang runaway winners at the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Gabi ng Parangal na ginanap sa Plenary Hall ng Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) noong Sabado, December 27. Naging hosts ng gabi sina Edu Manzano at Kris Aquino. Dapat ay si Vice Ganda ang co-host ni Kris sa first part ng programme at si Edu sa second part pero hindi kaya ni Vice dahil kahapon na, December 28 ang interment ng Lolo Gonzalo niya. Reportedly ngayong Lunes ay magbabakasyon muna si Vice sa Hong Kong.
Ang Bonifacio, Ang Unang Pangulo ay nag-uwi ng siyam na awards, including Best Picture, Gatpuno Antonio Villegas Cultural Award, at Youth’s Choice Award. Pitong awards naman ang iniuwi ng English Only Please, kasama ang 2nd Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor, at Best Director. Maaga namang wedding gift sa isa sa producers ng Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2 na si Dingdong Dantes ang anim na tropeo kasama ang 3rd Best Picture at Best Supporting Actress at Best Supporting Actor.
Walang tinanggap na tropeo ang ibang entries, si Ryzza Mae Dizon ang nanalong Best Child Performer sa My Big Bossings. Nagkatawanan ang audience nang manalo si Derek Ramsay at sabi ni Kris: “Robin, Coco, talagang ganyan ang buhay. Okey na Coco, na top grosser ever for a horror movie ang Feng Shui.” Happy na si Kris na nominated na best child performer ang anak na si Bimby Aquino Yap sa The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin at sila naman ang top grosser ng festival.
Si Jennylyn Mercado ang tumanggap ng award ni Derek Ramsay at sinalubong siya ni Edu habang paakyat ng stairs at beso-beso sila ng dating girlfriend ng anak na si Luis Manzano. Binasa ni Jennylyn ang text ni Derek na “sorry, ma-traffic sa EDSA,” ang famous line ni Jennylyn sa “English Only, Please.”
