Bautista, Marcial lumarga na; Fernandez nagpaiwan

MANILA, Philippines - Nakatakda na sanang magtungo ngayon sina flyweight Ian Clark Bautista, welterweight Eumir Felix Marcial at bantamweight Mario Fernandez sa Baku, Azerbaijan para sa pinakahuling Olympic qualifying event.

Ngunit inihayag kahapon ng Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines na hindi na makakasama si Fernandez sa biyahe nina Bautista at Marcial.

Sinabi ni executive director Ed Picson na nagkaroon si Fernandez ng katarata sa kaliwang mata kaya boluntaryo itong umatras sa paglahok sa Final AOB Qualifying Event sa Baku, Azerbaijan sa Hunyo 14-26.

Inireklamo ni Fernandez ang kanyang pagkaduling habang nagsasanay sa training camp ng ABAP sa Baguio City noong nakaraang linggo.

Kaagad siyang dinala sa PLDT Medical Baguio at tiningnan ng isang ophthalmologist na nakadiskubre ng katarata sa kanyang kaliwang mata.

Ito din ang sinabi ng isang ophthalmologist sa Manila noong Biyernes.

“Although it is not life-threatening nor a se-rious condition, this is boxing and the cause of the condition was trauma so we didn’t want to take the risk. We would rather he continue with the tests and treatment the doctors have lined up for him and hopefully he can fully recover and fight another day,” ani Picson.

Tiniyak ni ABAP president Ricky Vargas na ibibigay ang lahat ng kailangan ni Fernandez para sa kanyang pagpapagamot ng katarata.

Sasailalim si Fernandez, ang 2013 at 2015 SEA Games gold medallist at Asian Games bronze medal winner, sa ilang pagsusuri at pagpapagamot sa kanyang katarata.

Sa pagkawala sa koponan ni Fernandez ay pipilitin nina Bautista at Marcial na makasikwat ng Olympic berth para makasama sina light flyweight Rogen Ladon at lightweight Charly Suarez sa Rio Games.

Nakuha nina Ladon at Suarez ang kanilang mga Olympic ticket sa nakaraang Asian/Oceanian Olympic qualifier kung saan tumapos si Fernandez sa ikaapat sa kanyang weight class.
